Native American Artist

Bow, n.d.
Wood and twine
57 5/8 x 1 x 7/8 in. (146.37 x 2.54 x 2.22 cm)

Creation Place: North America, Native American
Technique: Woodworking
Credit Line: Gift of Mr. Jonathan Tibbet
Accession Number: P5206
Curved wooden bow strung with brown twine. Part of the twine may be coated with resin or some other substance. At one end, the bow tapers to a thick point. A notch is cut for the twine to tie around. At the other end, a short cylindrical piece extends; the twine is tied to that piece. At the center of the bow on the exterior a grooved square has been carved.

Materials
wood and resin-coated twine

Marks
There are two partial paper red and white paper labels adhered to the bow, but both are only partially legible. A paper hanging tag is written "#3" in black ink.

Commentary
This bow may be P5206 (Tibbet B500), but it could also be P1432a (Tibbet B501). The description on each of those cards is vague enough that this bow fits both. Even the dimensions do not help. This bow is 4cm longer than the measurements listed for P1432a, and it is 4cm shorter than the measurements listed for P5206. P5206 is more likely because the card notes "partially resin coated twine". The card for P1432a notes that it is strung with sinew, and this bow is clearly not strung with sinew.
