Commentary
Heap of Birds' four sets of sixteen monoprints, created in four shades of blue, are a form of "wall lyrics." The words are allusive rather than descriptive, expressing personal sentiments on a range of issues. Together they form a poetry of remembrance and reflection, subverting the ways in which language is used to create selective histories and to deny a voice to the marginalized. In the print, HAPPY TO DONATE WHAT YOU TOOK, the artist draws attention to the systems through which the work of Native artists has been collected and institutionalized. Too often the objects live in the archive but the voices of their makers have been stilled. (from exhibition label, Kathleen Howe, curator)
