Commentary
It is significant that Goya ends the Tauromaquia with an image of the death of the famed Pepe Illo who was gored and then carried around the ring on the horns of the bull while picadors tried in vain to distract the animal. The stark, dramatically lit image keeps the focus on the tragedy and reminds us that the ultimate result of the tauromaquia is always death.
