Commentary
Dashing spray and salt water roll up over the fantail of a U.S. heavy cruiser as she steams through heavy seas at high speed. On days like this, sailors give the deck a wide berth. This is in contrast to another photo, in which the blue jackets stretched lazily on the deck to soak up some sun, April 1943.
