Commentary
All Smiles At The Poles: State Representative Carl B. Stokes, who has a chance to become the first black mayor of Cleveland, was all smiles today as he and his wife Shirley emerged from voting booths. Stokes narrowly missed defeating Mayor Ralph S. Locher in a 1965 general election. In today's primary, he faces the Mayor again. Frank Celeste is a third candidate for the Democratic nomination. Early voting was heavy in the black east side area. Carl Burton Stokes (1927-1996) was an Democratic politician and diplomat who served as the 51st Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Elected in, 1967, he was the first black elected mayor of a major U.S. city. As Mayor, Stokes opened city hall jobs to blacks and women. He was known as a strong administrator, and he is remembered for his vision and motivation. He also initiated "Cleveland: Now!", a public and private funding program aimed at the revitalization of Cleveland neighborhoods. Stokes was reelected in 1969.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
