Commentary
Selma Alabama Battle Ground: this general view shows the black community in Selma, Alabama, where black people will start their seventh week fighting for voter registration rights. This week, they start an economic boycott of merchants. In the foreground is Gaston's Supermarket, hit hard by the boycott. In the background is the black section, including spires of the churches where black rallies take place and most demonstrations start. The twin spires (center) is Brown's Chapel and the single spire (right) is the Baptist church.
Marks
On recto: typewritten title and date. On verso: manuscript title, Associated Press stamp and date stamp.
Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
