Commentary
These French Spahis gaze from a freight car at the Swiss countryside as they start the trip to Veyrier, Franco-Swiss border point and their native France. They have just been released from a camp at Estavayer, where they were interned by the Swiss after they fled across the border from France last summer. They are the first French troops to be sent home under the recent agreement reached among the German, Swiss and French governments, February 1941.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
