Commentary
Those are real mines exploding below a trio of U.S. Rangers, who use a toggle bridge to cross the dangerous river at a Commando Depot in Scotland. A battalion of the American volunteers are being trained as hard-hitting assault troops, and much of their practice is accomplished under live fire from rifles, machine guns, grenades and mines. The Rangers are the Yanks who participated at Dieppe and are now carrying out surprise raids in Tunisia. England, March 1943.
Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
