Commentary
Civil Rights Leader Awaits Returns: Atlanta Civil Rights leader Andrew Young and his family watch television in Atlanta for returns from Wednesday's primary. Young is among four Democratic candidates seeking to unseat Representative Fletcher Thompson, a Republican from Georgia's 5th District. Seated clockwise are daughters, Paula, Lynn and Lisa, and Mrs. Young. Andrew Young (1932-present) is an American politician, diplomat, and activist. Young was an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He was a close confidant of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
