Commentary
Battling the U-boat menace somewhere in the Atlantic: As a stealthy U-boat is reported in the vicinity of the convoy their destroyer is escorting, a group of tars relay ammunition along the deck to last the under-sea’s menace. Successfully fighting submarines, destroyers kept the loss of supplies and equipment down to 2% as they escorted millions of tons of shipping to North American ports. One factor that helped to protect shipping was the new type of convoy auxiliaries, including light aircraft carriers designed to carry planes for protection, June 1943.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.

Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
