Commentary
This is Pearl Harbor a few minutes after the radio reports on the night of August 13, announcing that the Japanese government had accepted the Allies’ surrender terms. This scene was photographed from Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz’ rear headquarters. To the left is the Navy yard, and to the right is Ford Island. The pyrotechnics are from pistols fired from ships and red tracer bullets. The entire harbor was a mass of color—red, green and white—and it resembled a gigantic lighted Christmas tree. Scores of huge search lights in the area crisscrossed the sky during the spontaneous celebration, which lasted half an hour, August 13, 1945.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
