Witness: Charles Q. Stevens stands in the bathroom doorway in the rooming house in Memphis where he is a resident. Police say the shot that killed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was fired from this window. Dr. King was shot and killed on April 4 as he stood on the balcony of his motel.
Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
