Commentary
New Job In Town: Barbara Burgin watches as a Community Action Organization worker looks over her job application at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center in Buffalo, New York. Over 250 job applications have been processed at the center, as the city tries to find employment for young blacks after four days of rioting on Buffalo's East Side.

The 1967 Buffalo Riot was one of 159 race riots that swept cities in the United States during the "Long Hot Summer of 1967". This riot occurred on the East Side of Buffalo, New York from June 26 to July 1, 1967. On the afternoon of June 27, 1967, small groups of black teenagers cruised the neighborhood of William Street and Jefferson Avenue breaking car and store windows. By that night, nearly 200 riot-protected police were summoned, and a violent encounter ensued.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
