Commentary
Home from St. Augustine, Florida, where they were jailed for participating in the Civil Rights Movement: Mrs. Hestor Campbell; Mrs. Esther Burgess, wife of black Suffran Bishop John Brugess; and Mrs. Malcolm Peabody, mother of Governor Peabody of Massachusetts. They receive a "freedom" diploma from Virgil Wood, who was in charge of the reception committee at Logan International Airport in Boston.
Marks
On verso: United Press International stamp, date stamp and newspaper caption with date stamp affixed.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
