Commentary
Faubus Releases Statement on Presidential Message: After receiving a message from President Eisenhower, Governor Orval Faubus reads a prepared statement to newsmen on the front steps of the Governor's mansion in Little Rock this afternoon. Faubus said the message assured him of early return of control of the National Guard and a withdrawal of regular army soldiers as soon as possible. Faubus said this was based on his assurance that he would enforce the integration order. Four Southern governors conferred with the President today to seek a solution to the problem.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
