Commentary
“Ike” Eisenhower—a relentless war chief: Lt. General Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Army in Britain, thrusts his head forward while talking to reporters at a London press conference. A former cowboy, ditch digger and professional baseball player before entering West Point, Eisenhower still displays characteristics that go hand in hand with the aforementioned occupations. He’s rugged, a tough taskmaster and believes party weekends and social functions have their place—but not in this war. He works 17 hours a day, seven days a week and thrives on it, August 1942.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
