Commentary
Roy Wilkins, Executive Director of the NAACP, charges the Nixon Administration with "playing cat and mouse" on school integration at a press conference in Jackson, Mississippi, where the NAACP is holding its 60th convention. Roy Wilkins (1901-1981) was an instrumental figure in Congress' passage of the Civil Rights Acts of the 1950s and 1960s. He was one of the key leaders who organized the historic March on Washington. Additionally, Wilkins helped to oversee an increase in membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 25,000 members in the 1930s to more than 400,000 by the 1970s.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
