Commentary
Black Republicans Form Political Action Group: George G. Fleming (center) of East Orange, New Jersey announces to a news conference in Philadelphia the formation of the National Negro Republican Assembly, an organization of Republican black leaders designed to give black people a stronger voice in what the GOP does. he announcement came at the end of a two-day closed convention of black leaders. The organization denied support to both Senator Goldwater and President Johnson. At left is C. L. Townes of Richmond, Virginia, the organization's treasurer. At right is Mrs. Jeannette Weiss of Detroit, Secretary.

On recto: typewritten title and date. On verso: Associated Press stamp and date stamp.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
