Commentary
Former Major General Edwin A. Walker, who commanded the federal troops who helped enforce integration of Little Rock schools, told a press conference he was "on the wrong side," then urged Americans to support Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett. Walker, who resigned his commission and became a spokesman for conservative causes, said Americans "10,000 strong, from every state in the Union," should rally to "the cause of freedom" and back Barnett in his fight with the federal government over admission of a black student to the University of Mississippi.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
