Commentary
Southwestern Front: Although under heavy shell fire from the enemy, these Russian engineers repair and re-lay the track of a railway line in territory recently recaptured from the Nazis. It’s a tough job for these soldiers, because they often have to break through German lines to rip up rail lines in the enemy rear to cut off their retreat. Then, when the Russians have captured the territory, the lines must be repaired, c. 1941- 1942.
Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
