Commentary
Photos of the Latest U.S. Army and Navy War News---Bridging the Marne With Captured Boats: Company F of the 6th Engineers, Third Division constructing a pontoon bridge across the Marne River using boats captured from the Germans when the tide of battle turned. The Yanks have shown that neither rivers nor barbed wire can stop them. (Keep Up the Fight! Bonds Bring Victory!) The 3rd Division was activated November 21, 1917, seven months after the American entry into World War I at Camp Greene, North Carolina. Eight months later, it saw combat for the first time on the Western Front in France.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
