Commentary
India fighting with all her resources somewhere in India: The might of India is long history. This great empire of 389,000,000 inhabitants—one-sixth of the world’s population—finds herself on the active battlefront in a world conflict, with the fall of Rangoon and Burma believed to be only a matter of hours away. Here is a view of a railway workshop that has been adapted to the production of munitions, showing the finish boring of shells. Shells in the right-hand chute have been finish bored and are being sent to the government inspection bench, February 1942.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.

Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
