Commentary
Aboard a U.S. patrol boat off the Brazilian coast, Pharmacist’s Mate Raymond C. Buckley hovers over three sailors picked up after floating on a raft for 83 days in the South Atlantic. He is careful that they take their first solid food slowly. The men, left to right, are: Cornelius van der Slot, 37, of Rotterdam; Nick Hoogendam, 17, of Vlaardingen, Holland; and Basil Dominic Izzi, 21, U.S. Navy armed guardsmen. They survived the 83 days after their boat was torpedoed on fish, fowl and whatever rain water they could catch. Two other sailors died on the raft, March 1945.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
