Commentary
The “scramble horn” sounds. In two minutes, squadrons of gray fighters soar in tight formation above the green mountain of Oahu. This is the security patrol, guarding Hawaii from another Pearl Harbor. Each craft has a ground crew—a chief, his assistant and the armorers—ever alert for a signal from the squadron command room. When that signal comes, pilots dash for their planes and are in the air almost instantly. Through camouflage-covered trenches, pilots race for their planes, July 1942.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.

Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
