Commentary
Signing surrender document in Italy: Lt. General W. D. Morgan of the British Army (seated) signs instrument of surrender of German forces in Northern Italy and Western Austria. The signing took place April 29 in the royal palace at Caserta, near Naples, Italy. Standing, from left, are: Lt. Colonel J. G. Sweetman, Deputy Secretary to Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander; Rear Admiral S. S. Lewis, Chief of Staff to Commander of U.S. Naval forces in North African waters; Air Vice Marshal G. B. A. Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
