Commentary
Two German officials in civilian’s clothes at left get unconditional surrender offer from British Lt. General W. D. Morgan (4th from right with hands clasped behind him) at nine-minute conference in Caserta, Italy on April 29. The meeting resulted in the surrender of enemy forces in Northern Italy and Western Austria. The two Germans are not named, but are identified as representatives of Col. General Heinrich Von Vietinghoff Scheel and Obergruppenfuehrer Karl Wolff. Others in picture are not indentified, 1945.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
