Commentary
History made on the high seas: Aboard the USS Augusta on the high seas. This picture was made on August 9th prior to the formal dinner aboard the USS Augusta during the historic meeting of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill. Standing left to right: W. Averell Harriman, Lease-Lend Representative in England; Harry Hopkins, Lease-Lend Administrator; Admiral E. J. King, Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Rear Admiral Ross T. McIntire; Sumner Welles, Undersecretary of State; Brigadier General Edwin Watson, Military Aide to President Roosevelt; Captain Elliot Roosevelt; Admiral Harold R. Stark, Chief of U.S. Naval Operations; Captain John R. Beardall; General George C. Marshall, U.S. Army Chief of Staff; and Ensign Franklin D. Roosevelt. Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
