Commentary
Wee Drop Of Christmas Cheer -- Amid Gun's Boom: Not bothered a bit by the roar of the gun being fired on German positions in the hills above San Vittore, Italy, this Yank with the Allied Fifth Army takes a drink of something during Christmas dinner, December 25. We'll bet he didn't even hear the gun go off. The Fifth Army was at the Winter Line from November 15, 1943 to January 15, 1944.
Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Marks
On recto: Label in bottom right corner, "DISPATCH / PHOTO NEWS / SERVICE / INC. / NEW YORK". On verso: Typewritten label attached in center, "WEE DROP OF CHRISTMAS CHEER -- AMID GUN'S BOOM / Not bothered a bit by the roar of the gun being fired on German positions in the hills above San Vittore, Italy, this Yank with the Allied Fifth Army, takes a drink of some- / thing, during Christmas dinner, Dec. 25th. Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
