Commentary
Obeying the law, the young men of the peaceful “plain people”, the Amish of Southern Pennsylvania, register for the draft. Their religious teaching against war and military service automatically places them in the “conscientious objector” class, and it is improbable that they will ever wear a uniform or shoulder a gun. Here is a general view in the firehouse at Intercourse, PA., as Amish men registered. The Amish are distinguished by their traditional broad-brimmed hats, full beards, and, when noticeable, their button-less black coats. Don’t let the beards fool you, these young fellows are well within the 35-year limit of the Selective Service Act, October 1940.

Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.

Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
