Their religious teaching against war and military service automatically places them in the “conscientious objector” class, and it is improbable that they will ever wear a uniform or shoulder a gun. Here is a general view in the firehouse at Intercourse, PA., as Amish men registered. The Amish are distinguished by their traditional broad-brimmed hats, full beards, and, when noticeable, their button-less black coats. Don’t let the beards fool you, these young fellows are well within the 35-year limit of the Selective Service Act, October 1940.
