Commentary
This photo of shattered German defenses on a Normandy beach shows for the first time the strength and intricacy of the fortifications and obstacles that our assault troops faced. Some parts of the French coast proved less formidable to the first Allied landing forces, but in this sector, the Germans employed all their cunning and military skill to make the defenses impregnable. Bitter fighting took place before an Allied foothold was gained, and it now appears that Rommel was so sure of holding the sector that he had no secondary line upon which to retire. Observers who have inspected the battlefield marvel that the Allied troops smashed their way through, June 1944.
Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
