Commentary
Allies Enter Outskirts of Rome: American armor rolling on Route 6 at the edge of Rome push forward to conquer the Italian capital. The sign points the way to the Eternal City. Allied forces fought fierce battles up the boot of Italy during World War II. Stalemated at the formidable Gustav Line north of Naples in late 1943, they outflanked it with landings at Anzio and Nettuno, then broke through it with a massive offensive in May 1944. By the fall of 1944, after more than a year of arduous campaigning, Rome and most of Italy had been liberated.
Technique
Ferrotyped prints are processed in such a way that they are shiny. The print has a sensitive surface, usually thinner, because it was put through a press while still wet.
Marks
On recto: Label in bottom right corner, "DISPATCH / PHOTO NEWS / SERVICE / INC. / NEW YORK". On verso: Typewritten label attached in center, "ALLIES ENTER OUTSKIRTS OF ROME / American armor rolling at the edge of Rome on route 6 pushing forward / to the conquering of the Italian capital. The sign points the way to the / Eternal City. Produced Exclusively by Dispatch Photo News Service, New York City U.S. Army Signal Corps Photo". Handwritten in graphite in top left corner, "DP-WW2-073".
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
