Commentary
General Patton Confers with Allied Chiefs: United States Lt. General George S. Patton Jr., left, was officially disclosed on August 15 to be in command of the U.S. Third Army. Here, he confers with Lieutenant General Omar N. Bradley, center, and Britain's Bernard Montgomery, right. The U.S. Third Army has crushed enemy resistance in lower Normandy and Brittany. Patton's ivory-handled revolver can be seen in his holster, August 15, 1944.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
