Conquest of Europe - Terms of unconditional surrender imposed by the Allies on the beaten Wehrmacht are signed by Col. General Alfred Jodl, Nazi Chief of Staff. Major Wilhelm Oxenius, Jodl's aide, left, and General Admiral Hans Georg von Friedeburg, Commander in Chief of German Fleet, look on glumly. The Chief of Staff signed the document at SHAEF headquarters in Reims, France, May 3, 1945.

Illustrated: Associated Press ID # 450503018.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
