Mark Markov-Grinberg(Rostov-on-Don, Russia, November 27, 1907 - November 1, 2006, Moscow, Russia)
The Oath of War, Winter 1943 (possibly printed 1950s)
Ferrotyped gelatin silver print on paper
13 3/8 in. x 12 7/8 in. (33.97 cm x 32.7 cm)
This photograph was taken minutes before this regiment attacked an entrenched German defensive position.
Taken Winter 1943, printed later.
Signed, dated and titled (in Russian) in graphite on verso.
Ferrotyped gelatin silver print. Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
P2005.10.1 and P2022.26.12 are two prints of the same image.
