Commentary
Start of Chain Reaction: In the North, as in the South, most black people live in ghettoes. These tenements are in New York City. Northern blacks say the restricted housing leads to de facto school segregation. They demand admission to white schools, which the city maintains better. This demand is, in turn, tied to the need for better education to equip black students with the skills they must have to improve their job status.
Marks
On verso: manuscript title, date stamp, newspaper stamp and newspaper caption with date stamp affixed.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
