Commentary
Addresses Urban League: President Lyndon B. Johnson is applauded by Whitney Young (right), Executive Director of the National Urban League, after the President addressed the organization's 12th annual Equal Opportunity Days awards dinner in New York City. In his speech, President Johnson noted many Civil Rights gains have been made in the past five years. "But we are nowhere in sight of where we must be before we can rest...," he said. Whitney M. Young, Jr. (1921-1971) was an American Civil Rights leader. He spent most of his career working to end employment discrimination in the United States and turning the National Urban League from a relatively passive Civil Rights organization into one that aggressively worked for equitable access to socioeconomic opportunity for the historically disenfranchised.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
