Klan leaders wire president: Ku Klux Klan leaders Robert Shelton of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Calvin Craig of Atlanta, Georgia have requested a conference with President Johnson to discuss Johnson's attacks on the Klan. This picture was taken some time ago. Craig is Georgia Grand Dragon of the United Klan, and Shelton is Imperial Wizard of the same organization, Atlanta, Georgia.

Robert Marvin Shelton (June 12, 1929 – March 17, 2003) was a former car-tire salesman and printer who became nationally famous as the Imperial Wizard of United Klan's of America (UKA), a Ku Klux Klan group. Shelton served as the UKA leader starting in 1961. UKA membership peaked with an estimated 30,000 members.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
