Commentary
Flag At Half Staff At LBJ Ranch: the United States flag flies at half staff at President and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson's Texas Ranch today honoring slain Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Stonewall, Texas.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968.

On verso: date stamp.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
