Commentary
William H. DuBay, the priest who challenged the cardinal on the race issue, blesses a group of pickets supporting him outside of the Los Angeles Chancery. Father DuBay was on his way to meet James Francis Cardinal McIntyre. Dubay accused McIntyre in a letter to Pope Paul VI of intimidating priests and Catholic laymen who were active on the Civil Rights issue. William Henry DuBay (b. 1934) was a Catholic priest and activist whose activities and suspension from the priesthood created controversy in the mid-1960s. He published widely on Church reform, the rights of ethnic and sexual minorities, and plain language.
Marks
On verso: manuscript title, Associated Press stamp, date stamps, newspaper stamp and newspaper caption with date stamp affixed.
Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
