Commentary
Congressman John M. Murphy is one of the few federal legislators who has visited Resurrection City, the camp site for the Poor People's March on Washington. With aide Robert Garner (left), Murphy is escorted through the camp by a security marshal identified only as Alfred.

On Tuesday, May 21, 1968, thousands of participants in the Poor People's March set up a shantytown on the Washington Mall known as "Resurrection City". It existed for six weeks. The city had its own zip code, 20013.

Marks
On verso: manuscript date, agency stamp and newspaper caption affixed.

Materials
Ferrotyped prints have a sensitive surface, usually shiny and thinner, because they are put through a press while still wet. Ferrotyping makes the surface of the photograph smoother. Light does not scatter as much on a smoother surface, so this increases contrast. That makes ferrotyped images better for press photography.
