Poor People Demonstrate at Capitol: several hundred black people ended a state-wide Poor People's March to the state capital in Tallahassee, Florida. The demonstrators held a rally on the steps of the State Supreme Court in a light rain. The Florida legislature opens a 60-day session Tuesday, Tallahassee, Florida.

The 1971 Poor People's March from Miami To Tallahassee was sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to demand prison reform, an improved welfare system, and greater political representation. Lydia and Johnita Due, daughters of Civil Rights activists Patricia and John Due, headed the march. They were pushed in a double stroller by Reverend Ralph Abernathy, head of SCLC, and Miami community activist Mrs. Galys Taylor. Reverend James Orange and other SCLC staffers also participated.

Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
