Mayor Stops March: Camden, Alabama Mayor F. R. Albritton meets face to face with black Civil Rights demonstrators at the city limits in Camden. The Mayor and city officials stopped the group at the city limits when they could not produce a parade permit. The group was later dispersed with smoke bombs. Camden Academy Student Demonstration: on March 31, 1965, Wilcox County students were peacefully demonstrating for their parents’ voting rights. They were attacked with smoke bombs by a sheriff’s posse just outside the Camden City limits. This demonstration was organized at the request of the students by Daniel Harrell and Major Johns, the two SCLC field directors. There was a group that marched from St. Francis church outside the city limits and another that came down the hill from Camden Academy. The St. Francis group included young people from Gees Bend, Coy and other small county communities.

Materials
Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
